Livingston County Hospice Receives Lift Chair Donation
MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., Sept. 8, 2026 — End of life care in Livingston County received a boost this week thanks to a $1,500 donation from Strollin’ for the Colon to the County’s Health Department. Livingston County Hospice will use the funds to acquire a specialized lift chair for local hospice patients receiving care at home.
The new equipment will fill an existing gap in healthcare coverage through Medicare, which typically only covers 80% of a lift mechanism’s cost but excludes the chair itself. This results in patients having to pay for the frame, padding, and upholstery on their own. Thanks to this donation and a discounted rate from the medical equipment supplier, Hospice will be able to supply the chair to patients in need free of charge.
"Receiving these funds will allow us to provide a specialized lift chair to families who need them most, easing the physical strain of daily care giving while restoring comfort, safety, and dignity to our patients,” said Jill Burley, Livingston County Health Department’s deputy director. “We’d like to thank Strollin’ for the Colon for this donation along with our community partners at Quinlan’s Medical Equipment & Supply for the discounted pricing they were able to offer."
The lift chair slowly tilts forward to assist patients into a standing position, preventing falls, relieving physical discomfort, and reducing the physical strain on caregivers.
This donation highlights a 15-year partnership between the Livingston County Department of Health and Strollin’ for the Colon. Founded by Tina Cottone in memory of her late sister Toni, a former Livingston County Surrogates Court chief clerk who passed away from colon cancer, the non-profit focuses on colon cancer research, patient support, and early detection awareness across Livingston and Monroe counties. Each year, it hosts Toni’s Race, a 5K run/1 mile walk, and donates part of the proceeds to the Livingston County Department of Health’s Cancer Prevention Program. This year, Toni’s Race is on Sept. 12 beginning at 9:15 a.m. in Mendon Ponds Park, Pittsford. In support of the County’s public health campaign, the organization also funds colon cancer awareness banners, which the Health Department places on local main streets.
“Strollin' feels very fortunate to have partnered with the Livingston County Department of Health for the past 15 years,” said Doug Stark, a member of the Strollin’ for the Colon Board of Directors. “The work the department does, particularly during colon cancer awareness month in March each year, is core to the mission of our organization. The reach the department has throughout the County ensures the funds Strollin' can provide reach the greatest number of people. This chair will provide a little relief for patients and their families and Strollin' is honored to be able to provide the funds for it.”
The only certified hospice program in the County, Livingston County Hospice offers a broad range of services aimed at supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families, including family bereavement support, medication home delivery, and on-call 24/7 nursing availability.
